Final Day of working with the kids! Grateful for this amazing opportunity, it's been a joy working with them, one big highlight at the end of my week, so I will miss working with them. I wish them all the best. Thanks Agnes Scott and Dr. Sethi for allowing me to do this!
Great day with my kids, there were only three of us so I got a little more personal time to help them develop better reading out loud skills and we had a deeper conversation about empathy with disabilities. Enjoyed it a lot! I'm going to miss working with them as next week is my last session!!
I enjoyed reading again with my book group. I had a couple of challenges getting some students to pay attention/follow along with their classmates today- they were more interested in laying down and playing with a spider, but I was able to refocus them. Overall we had another great day and they told how much they enjoyed reading with me- that made me proud/happy to be working with them. They were an eager/ambitious group wanting to read almost triple of what I assigned, liked that too, it was sweet/cute even if it was unrealistic. Looking forward to the next week!
Today was a great day with my kids, we had to have a deep conversation about disabilities and empathy- not pity or sympathy for others who are different from ourselves, and then continued our reading. They really are a great group of kids and I really enjoy working with them!
I had no idea that garden was so big! I've walked past it so many times and never bothered to step in and look around, I wish I had sooner, it's amazing! I really enjoyed working here, garden work makes me feel good, and we really helped a group in need. Sadly a giant tree fell down on the property after all the rain we had earlier last week so we helped break down the limbs. Another group helped create better drainage in a creek section of the property to help with future rain problems as well. Overall I was glad to serve with my fellow Mortar Board reps and would definitely recommend going back to work with them again, great community partners!
First official reading day with my kids! They were great, very engaging and patient with each other reading out loud. I'm enjoying my time as a student teacher volunteer and can't wait for next time!
I spent the morning removing invasive species from the back of campus helping to clear the way for healthy tree growth in our urban forests. It was meditative removing the vines. I really enjoyed it and liked talking with our Trees Atlanta representative. I want to go back and finish the job, there was so much more to do on that site! Definitely recommend volunteering with Trees Atlanta, they're a wonderful organization!
It was a great day sorting all the incoming goods that were donated. They estimated that we packaged over 16,000 pounds of food or over 11,000 meals in that one shift! Great group to volunteer with, they make it a good educational experience by teaching us about their mission, their projects, and of course how they sort donations. Good music playing the whole time too, definitely want to volunteer with them again!
Today I was introduced to my group of students I would be working with and spent the class period getting to know them a bit better. We talked about how the book club would work and I introduced them to the book. Very sweet group of kids, I feel lucky and can't wait to get started!
Today I got to meet the class that I will be volunteering with for the semester for my book club. The kids were all very welcoming and sweet. I'm looking forward to working with them more and getting to learn more about them as we read together.
